President Points Autumn 07 PDF Print E-mail
G’day. I hope you had an enjoyable Christmas and New Year break, and none of you broke your credit cards. I always lock mine in the safe, the joys of being an impulse buyer.

Regrettably, due to an illness in the family, Sandie has resigned her position on the committee. On behalf of the Guild, I would like to pass on our best wishes to Sandie and her family. Sandie is still looking after the membership renewals, so these can be sent to her. Adam and I will be looking after everything else until the A.G.M, so please direct everything else to one of us.
The secretary and treasurer’s positions will need to be filled at the AGM so please give some thought to raising your hand. I still feel however that these positions are best served by one person as there is quite a bit of cross over. If you are interested, or have any questions, please give me a call.

You will find all of the show info, as well as nomination and voting forms in this issue. Any notices of motion must re received by the 16th March 2007, to allow the member to be notified before a vote is taken. If no nominations are received, nominations will be called from the floor. You will also find a notice of motion proposed by me in this issue; with regard to a change in the voting process for committee members.

Currently, all positions are up for renewal every 2 years, the difficulty that can arise from this is, when a totally new committee takes over, there is a fair amount of uncertainly regarding what has to be done. What I am proposing is that the secretary and treasurer be elected in the alternate year. This would mean that there would always be someone on the committee with a minimum of 12 months experience. I feel that this would allow an easier transition for new committee members and a continuity of process for the committee.

Adam has the show under control and is looking at some other advertising and promotion ideas, but as always, we would like to hear any ideas. Sandie’s resignation means we will need volunteers to man the Guild table over the weekend, as well as people to be on the door. Please let Adam know if you or a partner can help out. If not we will have to pay someone to man the door. Also remember we have the sword swallower performing on both days.

We will also be having another award at the show this year. Col Barn has kindly offered to donate an award in memory of past guild members no longer with us. Col is finalising the criteria at the moment, but it will focus on craftsmanship not a specific style. We hope to again have the “How to”
video running during the show and we are looking for a couple of makers to do a short talk or a demo on some aspect of the craft. Let me know if you are up for it.

It has also been suggested that we make use of the foyer as a display area, and I am trying to find something suitable. If anyone in Melbourne knows someone that may be interested, please give me a call. Note: This is a display only, no items for sale.

Adam has indicated that this is his last year on the show committee, so we also need to find a replacement for this. If we can get 3 people on the show committee this will make the process very simple. As I have said before, this committee must be made up of members from in, or around Melbourne. All show booking’s are to be sent to Adam.

For those that were unable to attend the Canberra show, make sure you put it on your calendar for next
year. I think all who attended had a great time, I know I did. And I only got lost once, not counting
trying to find Karim’s place on Sunday. The workshop session on Sunday was great, and for me this was
the highlight of the weekend. I think my demo may have confused people more than it enlightened them
but I did warn them in advance. Congratulations Karim, you did a great job. I will definitely be there
next year.

All Done,
Doug
